Description

Here at the heat is on, we put the knowledge of what you need directly in your hands as the homeowner, so you needn’t ask or wait for information from your electrician. Here we give you complete expert guidance for this specific heating element — so you can source all parts needed to ensure a smooth and successful installation of your electric / dual fuel towel rail or radiator when your tradesman arrives.

what is a heating element?

  • A heating element is used as the heat source in an electric towel rail or radiator.
  • It works by heating the water or oil inside the radiator, in the same way an element heats water inside a kettle.

temperature control & operation

  • The VEO is a Wi-Fi enabled controller which powers the SMART Split probe (sold separately), forming a complete and reliable heating element.
  • Basic control (temperature and a simple timer) is available directly from the front panel.
  • Full advanced functionality is available through the Terma SMART app (iOS/Android) for full control and flexibility.
  • Offers 5 room temperature settings from 15°C to 28°C.
  • Includes a drying function and a full 7-day timer.
  • Compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT for voice and smart-home integration.
  • No additional hub is required.

element specifics

  • Compact dimensions: 75.6mm length from thread down, 70.5mm width.
  • Supplied with a straight cable and fitted UK 3-pin plug (remove if used in a bathroom).
  • IPx5 rated, safe for use in bathroom environments.
  • Class 1 device meeting electrical safety requirements.
  • UKCA approved for compliance with UK regulations.

precision heating options

  • Can be paired with the VTS wall-mounted temperature sensor and the VOS open window sensor (both sold separately) for precise room-wide temperature measurement.
  • Provides optimal comfort and energy efficiency by adjusting heating based on room conditions.
  • Features geo-location functionality, reducing temperature by 3–4°C when leaving home and returning to comfort mode when you arrive.

colour selection

  • Offers the widest choice of colours available on any element on the market.
  • Choose between a black or white fascia (main control screen) and the cable will be the same colour as the fascia.
  • The clamshell outer casing is available in a variety of colours to match or complement your radiator or towel rail.
  • Achieve an exact colour match when pairing with a Terma radiator in the same finish.
  • Alternatively, achieve a close colour match when pairing with other Terma models or radiators/towel rails from different manufacturers.

wattage selection advice

  • Choosing the correct wattage heating element is essential for safe and effective performance.
  • Select an element with a wattage as close as possible to the radiator’s central heating (hydronic) output measured in watts.
  • If the output is listed only in BTUs, convert using the formula: BTUs ÷ 3.41 = Watts.

installation

  • Full installation instructions are provided in the accompanying manual, but here are some useful notes before fitting.
  • Never switch on the element in open air — it must be submerged in the heating medium to operate safely. The element has a safety cut-out if it runs dry, so your tradesman should not test it by powering it on before installation.
  • The element can be installed vertically or horizontally for versatile placement.
  • The supplied cable is 1.5 metres long and can be extended (daisy chained only) or cut to length as needed.
  • Elements that have been fitted cannot be accepted for change-of-mind returns.

standard option vs. masking option

  • You can choose to buy this element with or without the masking cover on the rear.
  • The masking cover conceals the wire up to the entry point into the wall, providing a neater, tidier appearance.
  • Important note: Masking requires the wall to be trowelled out; if walls or tiles are already finished, the standard (non-masking) option is recommended.
  • Masking length varies between 57.2mm and 72.5mm, measured from wall to centre of inlet.
  • The control head adds a further 30.1mm depth in front of the masking.
  • Overall projection: 87.3mm (30.1 + 57.2) to 102.6mm (30.1 + 72.5).
  • For compatibility, the radiator/towel rail’s “wall to centre of inlet” figure must fall within this range.
  • If the entry point is deeper or shallower than this range, the masking cover option cannot be fitted.

electrification advice

  • Before electrifying any towel rail or radiator, confirm that the chosen model is suitable for use with a heating element.
  • Not all towel rails or radiators are compatible, as internal design and heat circulation vary between models.
  • Installing a heating element in an unsuitable radiator may result in poor performance or failure, which will not be a fault of the element.

dual fuel advice

  • When using this element as part of a dual fuel setup (electric in summer, central heating in winter), the towel rail should be bled regularly.
  • Air can gradually build up inside the system, which may cause overheating if the element operates without sufficient water circulation.
  • A heating element must never be operated dry, as this can cause excessive surface temperatures and damage towels or clothing.
  • This works on the same principle as a kettle — never run it without water inside.

guarantee & replacement

  • Backed by a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty for added reassurance and peace of mind.
  • Usual lifespan of a heating element is 4 to 7 years depending on use.
  • At end of life, you can simply replace the heating probe (SS1) part of this element while the controller can continue to be used, making this a cost-effective long-term solution.
